Settings and your API key
Last updated: October 2026
Flowmaps's AI features run on Claude, using your own Anthropic API key. You stay in control of the costs and the account, and Flowmaps never pays for or sees your usage.
There's one key per workspace. The workspace owner adds it, and everyone in the workspace uses it. Invited to someone else's workspace? Then you don't need a key of your own there: Settings shows "Provided by …". See Teams.
Which features need a key?
| Feature | Without a key | With a key |
|---|---|---|
| Ventures, Mind map, Kanban | ✅ Works | ✅ Works |
| AI suggestions | ❌ Off | ✅ On |
| Build prompts | ❌ Off | ✅ On |
| Flags | ✅ Standard text | ✅ Explanation written by Claude |
Add your key
- Go to console.anthropic.com and create an API key. Name it something like
flowmapsso you can recognise it later. - In Flowmaps, open Settings in the sidebar.
- Paste the key (it starts with
sk-ant-) and click Save key.
Flowmaps checks the key with Anthropic, then shows "Saved to this workspace, encrypted" with the start and end of your key.

Where your key is kept
- Your key is saved to the workspace, encrypted. It works on every device, for everyone in the workspace.
- Flowmaps checks the key with Anthropic when you save it, so you know right away that it works.
- After saving, you only see its start and end (like
sk-ant-api…abcd), never the full key. Teammates never see it at all, only that a key is there. - It's only used for AI requests in this workspace, and never logged. Viewers can't use AI features, so they can't spend it.
- Replace swaps in a new key; Remove deletes it, which turns AI features off for the whole workspace.
Costs
AI usage is billed by Anthropic to the key owner's account, including what teammates use. To stay in control:
- set a monthly spend limit in the Anthropic console, and
- give your key an expiry date, for example 30 days. When it expires, Flowmaps tells you it was rejected; create a new key and paste it in Settings.
Build prompts use the most text, so they cost a bit more than suggestions and flags.
Your profile
Under Settings → Profile:
- Your name: shown in the app, and to your team once you invite people.
- Photo: click Upload photo (PNG, JPG, WebP or GIF, up to 2 MB). Square photos look best.
- Email address: type a new address and click Change email. We send a confirmation link; your email only changes once you click it.
Click your name at the bottom of the sidebar to get here quickly.
Preferences
- Coding tool: the tool your build prompts are written for (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or any agent). You can still pick another one on a card.
- Appearance: match my computer, light or dark. The same switch sits at the bottom of the sidebar.
Plan
Flowmaps is free during the beta. Your AI usage is billed by Anthropic on your own key.
Security
Sign out on all devices signs you out everywhere at once, for example after losing a laptop. The flowmaps command and Claude stay connected; disconnect those under Terminal in Settings.
Your data
- Download my data gives you one file with all your ventures, cards, flags, build prompts, help articles, skills and settings. Your API key and access tokens are not included.
- Delete my account removes your account and the workspaces you own, with everything in them (also for the people you invited), and takes your public help pages offline. You're removed from workspaces you were invited to; those keep working. Type
DELETEto confirm. This can't be undone, so download your data first if you want to keep it.
Troubleshooting
