Import a project you're already building
Last updated: October 2026
Started your app before Flowmaps? Bring it in. Claude Code reads your code, lists its features (what's built, what's half done and what's still missing), lets you check the list, and turns it into a mind map. Everything that already works is marked Shipped, so you see right away where you are and what's next.
It works for a project on your computer and for one on GitHub, private repositories included.
What you need
- Your project, in a folder on your computer or on GitHub.
- The Claude desktop app (or Claude Code in VS Code), connected to Flowmaps. See Use Flowmaps inside Claude; it takes a minute.
From your computer
-
In Flowmaps, click + New venture, then Already building an app?
-
In the Claude desktop app, click the Code tab (top left) and choose the folder your app is in.
-
Paste this and press Enter:
Import this project into Flowmaps.
-
Claude Code reads the project and shows you the features it found, as main features with their parts, each marked built, in progress or planned. It also says which tools your app uses (its tech stack).
-
Check the list. Change what's off, for example "Payments aren't built yet" or "Call it 'Brands can bid', not 'Bid flow'".
-
Say it's right. Claude Code creates the venture and gives you its link. Open it: your mind map lands card by card.
From GitHub
-
Make an empty folder for the project, for example Documents/my-app, and open it in the Code tab.
-
In Flowmaps, click + New venture → Already building an app? → On GitHub, and paste your repository's address. Flowmaps fills in the sentence for you, like:
Clone https://github.com/you/your-app into this folder, then import it into Flowmaps.
-
Paste it in Claude Code. The first time, a browser window may ask you to sign in to GitHub: that's how a private repository works too.
-
Then it's the same as above: check the list, confirm, and open your mind map.
What you get
- Cards for every feature, with sub-features under their main feature (same colour, part of …).
- Built features on the left, as Shipped; work in progress in the middle; planned features on the right, as Idea.
- "Depends on" lines where one feature needs another.
- A tech stack skill on the venture (see Skills): from now on, every build prompt and build instruction follows the tools your project already uses.
- Flags on features that touch something risky, like payments or personal data. Not legal advice.
Claude adds at most a handful of planned features your product clearly still needs, and tells you which. Remove any you don't want.
Then: keep building
Move what you want to build next to Ready, and ask Claude Code "Build … from Flowmaps" in the same project folder. See Build several features at once to do more in one go.
Good to know
- On the Free plan, the import is your one venture, and it can have up to 60 cards. For a big app, Claude groups small things into their main feature.
- Nothing in your code changes. Claude Code only reads it (and, for GitHub, copies it into the folder you chose).
- Want to start over? Delete the venture and import again (on Pro or Team).
